March 27th.
In response the Germany's defiance of the Munich Agreement and the occupation of Czechoslovakia, the United Kingdom pledged the support of itself and France to guarantee Polish independence."... in the event of any action which clearly threatened Polish independence, and which the Polish Government accordingly considered it vital to resist with their national forces, His Majesty's Government would feel themselves bound at once to lend the Polish Government all support in their power. They have given the Polish Government an assurance to this effect. I may add that the French Government have authorised me to make it plain that they stand in the same position in this matter as do His Majesty's Government."
April 2nd.The gaurantee was formalised as the Anglo-Polish military alliance during a visit by the Polish Foreign Minister.
July 14th
Bastille Day. Widespread demonstrations take place to show solidarity with Poland.
August 4th. Gamelin Appoints Charles De Gaulle as the new “Administrator of Armoured Forces”- His first act is to ban the split of armoured units into ‘Penny-Packets’ and to begin the issue of radios to the 1st DCr and DLM.
August 12th.
A vote of no confidence in the Chamberlain administration is successful Chamberlain resigns and the King asks Churchill to form a cross party administration.
August 23rd.
Britain starts mobilisation and units of the BEF are secretly entrained to UK ports ready for departure.
26th August
France begins mobilisation, which is completed by September 1st.
September 1st. Germany invades Poland. German 1st Army takes up defensive positions along the border with France.
September 3rd.Britain declares war on Germany. Churchill addresses the Nation as follows: "I am speaking to you from the cabinet room of 10 Downing Street. This morning the British Ambassador in Berlin handed the German Government a final note stating that, unless we heard from them by 11 o'clock that they were prepared at once to withdraw their troops from Poland, a state of war would exist between us. I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that consequently this country is at war with Germany."
France declares war later the same afternoon.
September 4th
BEF forces disembark in France. Crowds arrive to Greet them. as they march north east towards the German Frontier.
September 6th
BEF forces arrive at the frontline and begin to probe the German lines for weak points for the coming offensive,
September 7th
.Anglo-French forces begin Operation “Austerlitz” The British advance towards Hanover, as the French begin to push at Strasbourg. Units of the German 1st Army begin to retreat in the face of overwhelming forces to the pre-prepared Siegfried Line.
September 8th-10th
French forces attack and breakthrough the Siegfried line at Strasbourg. The German 1st Army's requests for reinforcements are finally accepted as the Anglo-French forces threaten to break out into the Central Germany, at the expense of the campaign in Poland. The Polish forces manage to stabilise the front due to the opening of the 'Second Front' and begin to liberate parts of her country slowly. Russia reneges on her plan to invade Poland, instead coming to her 'aid' and pushing on towards the German border.
September 14th
1st corps surrounds Cologne, cutting off the city. Lieutenant General Barker issues a demand for surrender, to which the Cities Mayor agrees. The city garrison is given full honours of war and are allowed to march out of Cologne with arms. British army intelligence secretly uses this chance to survey the equipment and Morale of German units. The 1st DCR Breaks out at the Battle of Offenburg*, beginning a headfast retreat in the south for Germany.
September 16th
Belgium Declares war on Germany and begins to mobilise forces to attack Germany, and Holland allows the landing and movement of troops through her ports and roads. The German 1st Panzer Division arrives at the Front and elements begin to engage the British near Munster*. The 1st DLM reach Frankfurt. Where Luftwaffe dive-bombers attack it.Soviets forces take Gdansk after pushing through Prussia. German Forces retreat from Poland, forming a defensive line at Pozan.
September 18th-20th
The 1st Armoured Division Engages the German 1st Panzer Division for 30 hours at the Liddell-Hart Modelled Battle of Sendenhorst . Although there is no clear winner, the 1st Panzer Division is put out of Action.The First RTR Completely equipped equipped with The New Matilda II's , the 4th, arrives at Antwerp and is ordered to support 2nd Corps south Hook towards Kassel.
September 22nd
The German army Counterattacks near Dortmund, catching the British 2nd Corps unawares in the flank. Hitler issues an ultimatum, demanding the Withdrawal of Allied forces from Germany and Peace. Churchill Refuses .
September 24th
Advance columns of the 4/7 Royal Dragoons reach Hanover at 4:00am, Followed by the 6th Infantry Brigadeat 10:00 am. Rommel’s 7th Panzer Division however encircles the city, cutting them off from the Rest of the BEF. The 1st DCR is forced onto the Defensive after beging repelled by a heavily fortified position on the road to Munich, Ending their “joyride” through Germany.
September 25th-27th
The 4th Panzer Division thrusts towards Frankfurt is blunted by the ‘thin red line’ of the 4th RTR’s matilda II’s near Fulda, as they move to close the Kassel Pocket The Matilda II’s reputation as invulnerable scares the Germans into withdrawing from the Pocket, leaving large amounts of Equipment to the allies .
September 28th
4th RTR , stemmed on by Captured supplies, reaches the River Werra at Hedmunden, north of Kassel, Effectively cutting the main line of Retreat for the Kassel Pocket. The 3 Infantry Division reaches them 4 hours later. The Majority of the Surviving German 1st Army is is now trapped in the pocket.
September 29th-30th
Hitler orders the Luftwaffe to Firebomber the Rhine and the Ruhr valley, to deny Anglo-French Forces the use of the River and the crossings. On the Evening of the 29th A large Bomber forces destroys the major bridges and Cites along the Rhine, starting a firestorm that destroys most of the Ruhr valley I The next day Churchill speaks as follows outside Downing Street.
" I have received word from Sources in Germany that Last night, The German Air Force Bombed their own Countrymen to deny their support for our cause. There has been serious civilian losses, and the Ruhr valley is in Flames that can be seen for miles. I ask you? Is this man worth what his people take him for, if he will sacrifice them for his own good?"
Soviet Forces Reach the Pozan line, and fail to breach it first time. |
