Posted on 10 November 2012 at 13:13:58 GMT We played out this engagement from El Alamein at the Tring Club last night. I used the scenario from the April issue of Minature Wargames, which I converted across for BKC. It was a great game and very close in the finish. At first it looked like a walk over for the British, the Axis lost 6 AFVs and the towed 88 in the first couple of turns, for no British loss at all. It all seemed to turn around once the British Shermans turned up. They engaged the Panzer IIIs attacked from the western flank and were all destroyed for only 1 panzer being knocked out. The German artillery were very successful in their use of smoke and managed to get most of the Italian infantry up close under this cover. However the Italian tanks lived up to their reputation as armoured coffins, suffering heavy losses to the 6 pounders as they tried to get close so that their guns had some effect. Both sides exceeded their Break Point during turn 11, but both passed their respective Break Tests in turn 12. In the end we gave the game to the Axis. The Brits only had 2 6 pounders, 2 MMGs and a mortar left, there were 5 Panzer IIIs inside the Snipe and the last 5 Italian AFVs were on the point of breaking in. A great fun evening. |
