Inspired by Keith's Battle report a few weeks ago:

http://blitzkrieg-commander.com/Content/Forum/T...

I picked up a copy of Scenarios for all Ages which I found in Waylands Forge in Birmingham the other day.

I decided to try out one of the scenarios yesterday called 'Taking the Initiative'

Again an interesting idea and a good battle report with photos to add to the interest.

Did you decide on aset number of turns before the start or was that part of the scenario, or just how much time you had to play?

This idea could be useful for solo play with either side being played in turn to maiximum effect of each side, or with each side set different objectives (eg 3 sets of objectives in envelopes with one set chosen randomly)?

I decided on 10 turns before the start of the game.

Inspired by these BatReps I picked up a copy of Scenarios for all Ages and played this very scenario on Monday night. I had USMC forces attempting to seize the Japanese held bridges. As the guys playing were fairly new to BKC I didn't want to slow things too much whilst I stopped to take pix etc. This scenario does have a lot of replay value though, so I will take pix & write up a report next time.
We played it for 10 turns and at the end of the game the Marines had managed to knock out the Veteran Japanese infantry squad and 47mm ATG tasked with holding the first village. The Japanese had lost most or their armour - a couple of Ha Gos & ShinHotos by this point - whilst the Marines still had 3x Shermans (the last reinforcements to arrive) and 2x Stuarts which probably would have enabled them to press on to the second river without too much hassle...
Both side had their share of double 1's and 6's, with one USMC formation rolling 2x double 1's in the same turn!
I was quite happy with the balance of forces but am thinking about tweaking the number of turns - 9 plus d6 perhaps. A few dodgy command rolls early on can make it a real challenge for the attacking force to achieve much. I'll probably play with the Auto Suppression rules too as those Japanese veterans were a tough nut to crack...

Yeah I found that too. I’m eyeing up a couple of the other scenarios in the book as well.

Depending on the weather I hope to get one played at some point over the bank holiday weekend. Watch this space!

I ran this scenario again with 2 of the guys at the club tonight. We tried 8 + 2d4 turns, rolling for 13 turns tonight.
The Shermans were the first US reinforcements to arrive, but they spent their first 3 turns failing command rolls!! Whilst this was happening, some crazy shooting from the 47mm ATG (assisted by the Ha Gos) took out all 3 Stuarts. The IJA conscripts behind the 2nd river refused to move all game, leaving the Japanese armour woefully unsupported. At the end of turn 13, the Marines had managed to get their Recce unit across the 2nd river, with the Shermans in column crossing the bridge. The Japanese had lost all of their armour by this point and the infantry, having witnessed the firepower of the Shermans, were understandably reluctant to leave their cover. Hugely enjoyable and it played out totally differently to the last time. I look forward to trying it again..
