Personally I am not sure if the Germans used their rocket artillery on an on-call basis. At least in modern terms, you can't "call in" an MLRS Barrage. It is either time-on-target, or prescheduled as part of a divisional or brigade fire support plan. So use of MRLs in the close fight is a somewhat controversial thing in my opinion. The German commander said machts nichts though, and used it anyway!
