Posted on 05 November 2009 at 05:57:00 GMT Nik Ain't you heard, when the Russians trained the dogs, they used Russian tanks to put their food under. Therefore, when released on the battlefield, the dogs ran under Russian tanks. Or so I have been told by a Russian veteran of WW2 during my trip to Russia. And the Germans were not dog-friendly to Russian dogs, they just shot them on sight. Paul PS. Undoubtedly, the above will be needing Pete to re-write 'BKC2', giving the Russians 'Mine-Dogs'. Stats anyone? |

Posted on 05 November 2009 at 13:00:06 GMT I'm not certain that the dogs were that picky in tank selection...and I know that if I had trained those dogs, of course using Russian tanks, I would take care not to release them near those tanks, but point them at the Panzers...I'm sure that some mutts got it wrong - but if the Germans started shooting them on sight [as indicated in Beevor's Stalingrad & elsewhere], there'd be a pretty good reason for it |

Posted on 06 November 2009 at 03:32:10 GMT Nice again, Dean. Nik The reason that the dogs went for Russian tanks, was that they were familiar to the dogs (thats what he said, smell and sounds etc). If I had trained the mutts, there is NO way I'd let them near my tanks when they are carrying their backpacks. Not sure how wide spread the practice was, but I think that they were first released nowhere near Russian tanks, but then some officer got careless later on. I just wonder who makes 1/285 mine-dogs? Now lets see, mine-dogs in 'AFV Reconignition Classes'. Cool thought. Paul |
