I have always been a black undercoat and dry brush type of painter for my moderns. While waiting for BKC-II to arrive my oppo and I cleared out our spares. I thought I would give some of the germans a refresh and tried the white undercoat and thin paint idea that GHQ are quite fond of.

White spray undercoat, Vallejo middlestone washed over. Cam pattern and then GW Mud Wash to finish. I haven't added decals yet but most of my stuff is WIP anyway.

The dark yellow is fine but I need to go lighter on the green as the scale effect is too dark.

This is all your fault Smile If you hadn't introduced me to BKC/CWC/FWC I would have remained blissfully happy with my 85 other periods and rule sets. I am now at 88 sets Wink

Seriously though. I could get used to this white idea. Speed and throughput was very quick I did 25 vehicles in a day using this method (less decals). I haven't tried it on US yet (which is the next pile of metal to do) and I am not even attempting to do it on infantry until I buy (doh, 89!) some Mainforce from Magister Militum at Newbury

Me a bad influence? Never! Gimme

I might try the white undercoat method on my 10mm Russian stuff. It may not work so well, as there is more surface area, but it can't hurt to try!

Just reading your workspace... would enjoy hearing about your island assault scenario.. I am making a Tarawa scenario myself. Not much experience with BKC rules but enjoying learning the rules. Could compare design notes. I'm using Micro Armor probably based on 30x30mm bases.

I have always used white undercoat and found it more versatile than black. Never understood why people went through the angst of trying to get white/yellow/some reds to work on a black undercoat, whereas it is easy to paint black onto white.

Nice work, the green may be a little dark, but it looks ok to me.

Haven't done anything for BKC with the pacific. I posed a question to the experts about what would make a good game but will wait and see in August what the new book can inspire.

As to white undercoat. I have just been trying it out on my 1/600th USN aircraft and I am happy with the results as well.

Undecided now about which way to go. I will stay with white for a bit on the US WWII vehicles and see how it goes, plus a bit of experimenting with the cam colours for scale effect.

When it comes to GHQ vehicles, I give them a soapy wash, and when dry paint them with no undercoat, just go straight to the base colour.

Use VMC paints.

Then hit them with a GW wash either Devlan Mud, or Badab Black, then a light drybrush of the original colour with a little white. Finish off with details on tracks etc with a two tone paint - main and highlight.

Have now also moved away from black undercoats on figures - use Army Painter Leather Brown spray, and wash with GW Badab Black. Gives a good dark shading to build up from, but not too dark to make it impossible to see the detail. Works a treat on everything from Baccus 6mm Mahdists to Mongrel Miniatures 28mm US Marines.

Okay, my tupence worth: I use Vallejo "Foundation White" and give a wash with Vallejo "Sepia Shade" such darkening the deeper areas of a miniature.
