well, I finally decided (after having a long hard think about expenses and what I need to buy now and probably in the future) that I was being unrealistic (and the wargames snob that I thought I no longer wasBlush) in going with the
CinC miniatures to rebuild my wargames collection.

I figure I'm just going to stick with Adler infantry and go down whatever cheap tank/vehicles range I can find to build up my armies

I guess that points me to H&R/Armstrong really?

Heck, if they're good enought for Mark Bevis they're good enought for meGimmeGrin

(just need to start budgeting and buying stuff now is allConfused)

Have to say I am still very, very happy with the freebies that were passed on to me of late (GHQ as well of all things)

The other thing to keep in mind is that you don't need artillery or aircraft really just observers, likewise most transport - and to be honest not really that many tanks. It was the PBI that did most of the fighting after all.
If you've set your heart on C+C or GHQ then let the armour build up slowly and start with mainly infantry games.

eg - Stugs and Pz 4's play pretty much the same as do Shermans and Cromwells so only get the one type to begin with - depending on which theatre you are doing.

This certainly makes sense if you are on a tight budget Smile

My advice is make a decision and then stick with it. Build in manageable chunks. Focus on a single project. These are all things that I have not done and my leadpile is huge and useable forces pitifully small.

Thanks guys, all good advice there

Yep, I'm going 6mm cos' it's cheap, doesn't take up too much space and I reckon I can have a passable go at making terrain for it at some point

Have to be honest I quite like it really, used to have oodles of 15mm but that was just too inbetweeny really

I know most folks are going 10mm now, but, for me anyway, 6mm is the right answerGrin

6mm is always the right answer. And I may be seen as a "GHQ snob", but that's mostly down to re-sale value for me, which is a large part of what I do. The cheaper options are actually very good, since 6mm is meant to be viewed as a force, not as individual figures.

The added bonus is also the cheaper manufacturers usually let you order individually rather than in packs, so rest assured, you're making the right choice all round Smile

Paul

Couldn't agree more that the "cheaper options are actually very good..."

My current project is to paint-strip, tidy up, re-paint & base several hundred Skytrex/Leicester Micromodels vehicles I bought (for about 5p each) with pocket money back around 1978.

With a bit of care and an "appropriate" paint job (in my case black for wheel wells etc, heavy drybrushing in a contrasting colour e.g. radome tan over green, and a dark wash) I am quite pleased with the effect.

(At least compared to my original approach - open the packet, slap Airfix olive drab/tank grey over everything, and get shooting...)

Cheers,

Pete

Just be aware that Adler figures are on the large side, so they probably go better with the larger 1/285th GHQ vehicles (I find CinC, though also 1/285th, slightly smaller) than with the smaller 1/300 H&R etc.

If your budget stretch how about GHQ figures (easier to paint) with Heroics and Ross or Scotia vehicles.

GHQ - very bad, altyhough about 50% of figures are nice, the rest look terrible, also very soft - easy to break. H&R far better.

If I had to start my Germans again in 6mm, I'd go for H&R and/or Scotia vehicles and H&R infantry. If their Wehrmacht minis were a bit better definded, I'd also go for Irregular's infantry. All my Russians are by Irregular and I really like the somewhat stout look of my Ivans.

Great stuff, it's really good when you get your decisions reinforcedCoolCoolCool

so I'm most certainly on the right track now, excellentGrin

I have to admit I just really like the Adler infantry, I can live with the slight increase in size, the other infantry I have seen (not seen the GHQ infantry though) all seems to be rather 'meh' you knowGimme

I used to have a whole Russian horde in 6mm waiting to be painted so I think that might be my first army to get, well, them and the GermansGimme

Good to see you back in the saddle Al!
I will do some more clearing shortly, might find a thing or two for you, like building and terrain. God, I can't believe how much I accumulated in 20 years of wargaming.

Don't forget Davco from Skytrex

http://www.skytrex.com/156/1300th-micro-armour-...

When I did 1/300 (25 years ago) my preference was H&R then Davco then Scotia. AFAIK the first 2 have not remoulded anything since then Scotia may well have done though.

H&R and Scotia are both good, but Scotia only have a small range atm.

Ah, I totally forgot about Skytrex to be honestBlush

I'm guessing it looks like H&R then for the most part to be filled out with Scotia

Hi Sean,
Awesome offer, thank you

Er, only problem is, to be honest, I don't actually have anything at all as yet. I am completely starting from scratch, I would certainly be interested in taking that stuff off your hands though if you're sure you can spare it?

Heck, I'm turning into 'Pikey Al' they're going to change my monicker here to the 'Scrounger' sometime soon I'm sureGimme
