Saumur tank museum in France has a PZIV with solid turret skirts and mesh side skirts!

Ahh.. Saumur, one place to visit before I die. A bit melodramatic perhaps, but I would love to go there and see some of their 'runners'.Grin

I think the mesh skirts were the first used but were more awkward to produce than simple sheet.

In reading Berlin by Antony beevor last night the Russians strapped mattresses to their hulls and turrets to act as spaced armour against panzerfausts. Now that would look cool if you had the time and skill to model it.

SteveJ,
I'm not sure how reliable it is, but in Panzerkampfwagen - Almark No6 in the Wehrmacht Illustrated series, there is a picture of the PZIV ausf J with the comment that in 1944 steel was in such short supply that full metal plate skirts were dispensed with since even mesh would detonate hollow charge weapons early.
So it seems their theory was that mesh was the later development.

"Ahh.. Saumur, one place to visit..."

For sure. A couple of years ago I was in Tours, which IRC is not too far from Saumer. However, I was not able to get to the museum at the time. Next time for sure.

Side skirts; the side skirts (Schurzen)were first fitted to the Ausf.G from April 1943. They were subsequently fitted to the Ausf.H and Ausf.J models. From September 1944 the wire mesh skirts (Drahtgeflecht Schurzen) were fitted to Ausf.Js.

Hope this helps.
