I have been toying with getting a late war british list for a while now.
I will be using pendraken 10mm.
Do the veteran army packs make for a good list or will I end up with surplus models?

I am looking to spend around £80 and want a decent and well rounded force that gives me lots of tactical options when it comes to army selection.

Thanks in advance.

Mick - look at the organisations of the British Army in 44-5. I'd base youe inital force on an Infantry Btn. which would have, at an ammedned 1 base per Platoon -

BTN HQ - CO Use a siganls lorry, and maybe a Carrier, with pipe smoking officer in a great coat. 2 i/c(HQ), 15 cwt. 2 FAO, 1 ALO

Carrier Platoon HQ - 4 bases with Carrier and 1-2 Rifle figures. Use it as Recce

4 Rifle Companies - 3 bases each

Support Company - HQ, 1 platoon, 3" Mtr, with Carrier, MG Platoon with Carrier(actually from Brigade), 2 AT Platoons with 6 pdr and Carrier (strictly Loyd, but can use Universals), Pioneer Platoon, with 15cwt.

12 3 tonners, same model, any type will do.

Tanks -

Churchill Sqdn, use 1 CS and 4 support vehicles, there's considerble debate on which marks to use, but the Mk VII and Mk VIII(CS one) look more like the early ones, so id use those.

Crusiers - suggest the Sherman (I prefer Cromwells as a tank). Get an RHQ - CO/HQ with an Armoured Command Vehicle or Tank clearly noteted, 2 HQ's in Scout cars.

1 -3 Squadrons of 3 Sherman, 1 Firefly (you could use Cromwell instead of Sherman).

Iv'e not costed this(points or cash), but it gives you either a an Infantry Btn from an Infantry division(can use eithr tank, but normally only 1 Sqdn), or Lorried Btn form an Armoured Division, with Shermans only. If it's too much cash wise, start on the infantry, with Churchills.

Hope that helps....

The Veteran back looks pretty comprehensive, it gives you an infantry battalion, with half-tracks so that it can be used as a Motor Battalion of an armoured division. Motor battlions were quite rare historically, so you may not really need all the half-tracks.

It gives you a full Regiment of Shermans (with Fireflys) and lots of artillery.

It is clearly focused on a Sherman equipped Armoured division (so either Guards or 11th AD). As Ian mentions you may prefer Cromwells or Churchills.

What seems to be missing are any Anti-tank guns (unless I have misread the codes - which really aren't very clearly presented on the Pendraken website).

Hi Mick

While I agree with the belligerent bits in the above list, the 12 lorries will take about £21 out of your budget. I would start with 1 lorry per company and consider it to be three for target purposes. While not in the rules I allow a 3 ton lorry to carry 2 infantry units, halving the number of vehicles required. It always seems strange to me that a 15 cwt truck and a 3 ton lorry have the same capacity. If costed at twice that of a “truck” the points will be the same. The down side is the risk to the contents is signifcantly increased !!!!

TJC - yes the lorries are optional, actually from RASC, I was trying to give a good generalised force. I've always had problems with the numbers of transport not matching the numbers of bases - from way back when testing Corp Commander/Korps Commander.

I did leave off Boffors Troops and Divisonal A/T, but i'm assuming Mick will be like the rest of us... TOPSY just growed.

Thanks for the replies.
Very useful.
Unfortunately Ian, I am hoping not to go down that route Wink
I started playing warmaster fantasy in 2006 with the aim to get 2 2000 point armies for me and a mate to play with.
4 years and 16 armies latest (smallest being 3k and largest being 11k) I may have storage issuesGimme
That being said I do fancy getting a German and Russian Force sometime soon Silly

Cheers
