Posted on 11 April 2019 at 18:31:57 GMT Reading up on their use, the spigot mortars were able to crack open the concrete of bunkers, rather than smashing through the firing slit. However, tactics also suggest that regular gun tanks were first used to engage and suppress the bunker before the AVRE approached to within the 100yd range, which implies that they had to approach in the firing arc. I guess you could try it both ways, but it feels like the attackers should use a historical combined arms approach, in which case firing from the frontal arc of the bunker seems reasonable.
