I am wondering whether 5 points is too cheap for a trench for one unit. For example, if infantry, you go from being hit on a 4 or more to needing a 6, and from no save to getting a 5 or 6 save. This makes your infantry unit very tough, but only costs you an extra 5 points.

Considering the advantages, wouldn't 10 points at least be fairer? Or even 15 or 20? This would knock-on to other field defence points values, of course. But when structuring a defence-attack game, i'm not sure the current points cost of trenches really reflects their value.

Maybe 10 points, but it's 5 points per unit (IIRC), so can quickly stack up.

I've found using needing 5-6 to hit from indirect fire (on and off-board) mitigates the difficulty in hitting entrenched units a bit.

Maybe they should be the same relative value as a unit with 5+ armour? Pete must have a magic formula stashed away somewhere...

In the context of only getting to buy them when defending, and being hideously outnumbered 2:1 then they make sense. In a straight point for ability, then no, they're exceedingly cheap.

Play Counter-Attack a few times where the defender is at 3:2 odds but no defences, and see how it goes without them Grin

Coming at this from another direction, I would gladly let anyone buy as many trenches as he wants. I think it limits the defender in mobility, and my mobile forces could quickly out flank that defensive line. "Forifications are a monument to the stupidity of man" Patton

Yes I can see that, after all the Americans just breezed across the Westwall in the Hurtgen Forest didn't they.

Excuse me Mr. Jester, think you'll find the forest had a lot more to do with it than the westwall. Most of the weapons had been stripped from the wall, plus many bunkers were locked with the local nazi officals refusing to hand over the keys to their own army.....Smile
