In the Russian Mid and Late war lists Scout Recce Unit can request Artillery Support as a recce action.
Is this as in on table artillery support units or can they requst off table artillery as well.

Because of the Russian rigid doctrine I assume that recce units do not have to be part of a fixed formation.

When trying to call artillery, does the unit attempt its communication roll, and if successful, then attempt to order using a command value of 6

This does not count as the nearest HQ's attempt at its orders phase. Is this correct ?

Thanks in advance for your help

I think it is only off table artillery. On table are direct fire and only commanded by HQs or CO.

I attach a Recce unit to a formation, but not sure if this is right, but it feels so to me.

When calling in the support, I've just used them to make a command roll on a 6, as per an FAO. No communication necessary IIRC.

Without the rulebook to hand the above could be complete tosh!

In one game I played with Craig and Keith, one Recce unit was the star of the show, calling in artillery support several times to devastating effect.

Agree with Steve, I'm sure it's off-table only.

Hi

I know this is arelatively old post but the question of Russian scouts requesting off table artillery aupport came up in a game I am currently playing and would be grateful for confirmation that SteveJ's interpretation of how it is supposed to work in the rules is correct (or otherwise)?

Many thanks

My take is that:

If they make a successful Recce role they may:

Request off board artillery (just like a FAO) with a CV of 6.

Communicate to the nearest HQ and either add one to the HQ's CV or spot for on table indirect weapons that are part of the nearest HQ's formation.

Hi Steve

Many thanks, that seems very logical. If the Recce and the request for off board artilery roles are both successful do you measure from the scout to the target (even if not visible to the scout) to work out deviation?

Thanks again, Paul

Hello,

Scout to target.

LOS does not matter, as the recce unit is deemed to have sent out a patrol who have located the enemy.
