The rules indicate (at least to me) that units on hills can't see over high area terrain (BUAs, woods) to enemy units beyond.

1. Is this correct?

2. I would suggest that most hills are significantly higher than a BUA or wood, so that there should be a bit of dead ground beyond high area terrain but enemy beyond this should be visible.

Pete? Anyone else?

Thanks in advance.

Keith, my answers would be:

1. Yes, that's the rule.
2. I accept that many hills are high enough to see over some woods and buildings but there are many that aren't and given the small size of hills used in wargames, I would suggest the rule is fine. If you use particularly big hill models, maybe 2' long and 4" high, then perhaps you could use a house rule for such hills.

Cheers

There's a recent file in the downloads with some suggestions on this - looks pretty good!

I hadn't noticed that addition in the downloads but it is an excellent example of a house rule and very similar to LOS rules I've used in the past.
I might even use it myself WinkGrinSmile

I think we're likely to trial it when we play in July, looks to be simple enough that it should just work, and 'accurate' enough that it doesn't make us all go 'that doesn't feel right...' Smile

Leonardo you have to look at the Downloads. There at the "House Rules".

The good thing about BUAs and High Terrain blocking LOS from hills is that it helps to stop the endless barrages of arty that are sheert death for the poor bloody infantry!

Shame you can't carry trenches around with you! Mind, it does drive home why everyone developed increasing amounts of APC equipped infantry... Although that comes with its own issues, usually in the form of large calibre tank gun rounds...

Keith

Hi, hope you are well. Some nice stuff on your blog by the way.

It you use different levels of hills, layered like I use, this leads to further issues. I use a variant of the house rules which I only just noted on this site. I measure the distance from the firer to the back edge of an intervening hill, in inches. I then convert this number to cm's and this is the distance of any dead ground behind the hill. This, therefore, varies the amount blind spot/dead ground. I 1/4 this number for the next level (3 over 1) and ignore any dead ground for 4 over 1.

This issue is also complicated, if you want this level of complication of course!, that some slopes are concave or convex which obviously have issues in itself. If you are using goggle maps/earth + literature for representing some historical battles this can become quite important.

I've decided on a house rule to cover this if I feel the need:

Areas of high ground can be classed as 'extra high area terrain' or just 'high hills' if you prefer. Units on this type of high ground can see over high area terrain. There will be a standard zone of dead ground behind the blocking terrain of 20cm.
