I can understand why there is a maximun on certain troop/vehicle types , as no one needs an opponent whose army is made up of Waffen SS and Tigers , however I'm a bit baffled as to why in some lists (France 1940 being a notable exception) there is a maximun on basic infantry and MG support units . In my own case , putting together a Republican Spanish force of 3000 points without using an unrealistic amount of support troops (especially if it's for a period when Russian armour is not available) is quite hard . Anb by the way , why don't the republicans get the 37mm AA gun that they had in the 1st edition ?

Infantry maximums by and large reflect the number of platoons in a battalion. I find that some support units are over represented e.g. Vickers MG in Brit NWE list 3 per 1000 when there were only 9 platoons in the entire division Stunned

I understand how the lists work , and that they allow for a battalion per 1000 points , but , because of the 1 battalion (per 1000 points) maximum (which the French don't seem to have) one would have to field a an unreasonable amount of support units to reach 1000 points , especially if A) The troops are low quality (20 point militia and conscript units) , or ,B) Armour and Artillery are a bit thin on the ground (Airbourne forces would make a good example , but sensibly , they haven't been given an Infantry maximum). See where I'm coming from ?

Actually once you take into account the CO an HQ or 2 plus the odd support unit you would probably struggle to get a full bttlns worth of Paras under 1000 points depending on how many infantry upgrades you give them. All the Airborne lists do have limits per 1000 by the way (9 for all except Uk glider troops who get 12). e.g. a Brit Para bttln would be 875 points with the compulsory CO and before giving any upgrades. Even with low grade troops I don't see how it is so much of a struggle.

A battalion in most armies should have at least an artillery battery (and FAO) available. That eats up some points.

If defending, they should have field defences, which eats up 10-25% of the available points.

If attacking, lots of artillery and lots of assets eat up points.

I am not sure how true it actually is, but to me, players often seem to prefer on table stuff rather than off board artillery. This is true of good artillery armies as well as abysmal artillery armies.

Steve.

I just tried an early SCW Republican Army , 2 battalions of militia , 1 regular battalion (Assault Guards) and using the maximum of command , arty . support plus the crap armour that was availabe before "Uncle Joe" really got on board it was an uphill struggle to get 2000 points , whereas , if the list had limited "good" infantry , with no maximum on militia/conscripts , I could have put together an infantry heavy force , short on support weapons and short on Command / Control , which would have been very realistic for July-October 1936 . Now d'you see what I mean ?

And Pete , do you think I should get therapy ? I seem to have some sort of OCD regarding SCW lists .

No , actually , you're right , I put myself into "WRG design a Winning Army" mode got my calculator out , and you are right . Sorry. However , when I was doing it I noticed that as well as the Republicans not having any AA , neither side seems to have any Pioneer/Engineer units . . . . But it's probably not important . . .
