A battalions worth is what we play 9-12 stands. Some have a few more and that can get a bit unwieldy.

With 9-12 you can keep them together and not be a prime arty target yet still retain some coherency

I generally play CWC and I've settled on CO plus roughly one command stand per six fighting stands.

We often use bttns on the large side. Typically 9-12 infantry, possibly a scout/recce, then AT, MG (3-4) and mortar. British bttns might have a carrier plt in addition (2-4 units). Hence a British inf bttn at full strength might muster 20+ units. Hence we tend to go with 2 HQs per bttn. One is the bttn commander and the other represents the command functions of the 2ic or the company commanders.

Yup, heavy battalions (like US armored infantry) work best with 2 command stands. I add a company radio vehicle for the second one.
