last night I was asked a question that I didn't know the answer for.

The situation was this, a recce unit rolled for spotting an enemy unit and passed. This enemy unit was out of LoS of everything on the recce unit's side. The player wanted to use the recce action to call in artillery. Since the FAO was out of LOS was

QuestionThis legal?

QuestionHow many dice should be used for deviation if it is legal?

Yes, it's legal as long as the FAO was the closest command unit.

Regards the deviation. I don't believe it's mentioned in the rules book, but I seem to recall Pete saying he uses the distance from the recce unit.

Hi Gavin,

could be wrong here (been known before!) but I've always used recce in the way you've described in this sort of situation.

So, as far as I'm aware, yes it's legal, and the deviation roll is calculated as it normally would be. OK, so the FAC can't see the target, but the Recce unit can (in an abstract kind of way) and communicates the co-ordinates to the FAO.

cheers

D'oh!! iAugustus beat me to it and, interestingly, came up with a different understanding of the deviation roll.

This is why we need a Q&A sheet!

The FAO was most definitely the nearest unit. I used the normal rules for deviation, distance from FAO to target, but gave a +1 for the relay of Recce to FAO. This cancelled out the british bonus which I thought was fair enough in the circumstances, but agree we need some clear definitions for a couple of things which aren't obvious from the rules.
