How would you treat depressions in the ground in your games?
It seems to be unreasonable to treat them as a "level -1" terrain and all normal "level 0" terrain as high ground (because you really can't determine the centre of that high ground).

Would it be a good idea to treat it as low area terrain with the LOS limitation only for seeing into and out of it, but not through it?

"How would you treat depressions"

I would take a little pill...

Sorry, I couldn't resist. The whole thing really depends on how you define the depression. Does it have steep slopes? How deep is it? What does the ground surrounding the depression look like (is it plateau-like or just continuous gentle slopes?)

If it is reasonably deep depression surrounded by a plateau like level ground, I'd say that any unit on the edge of the depression can all units in the same way a unit on a hill can see on normal ground. I'd give the unit on the edge cover to reflect hull down/using the ground for protection. If a unit is not on the edge or not on the hill, they cannot see down into the depression.

Sorry, I should have added I'm referring to the North Africa theatre. As there were many gentle ridges (which can easily be covered as high ground), there were many gentle depressions also.

By treating it as low area terrain, units in the depression should gain a cover save. It is more difficult to see in or out regarding to how far (and deep) you are in a depression.

But clearly troops should be able to look over a depression regardless how far or deep it reaches.

Hi,

Your idea should work mighty fine. Only thing I'd alter is that I'd use the LoS distance for high area terrain. 5/5/10 instead of 10/20/unlimited. That way you could also have depressions that can hide an AFV from another AFV.
