This is a new one for me - an Argentine mercenary unit called the Steel Regiment or "Regimento Acero." Headquartered in Buenos Aires, they've been hired by the government of Costaguana to train their large but underperforming military in anticipation of warfare with the neighboring Republic of Sulaco.






The Regimento Acero does not screw around, they do not do anything in half-measures, and most importantly, they do not work for free. Costaguana lacks the financial resources of Sulaco, and is betting an awful lot on a possible annexation of their neighboring republic and its rich silver mines. The Costaguañero leadership is mortgaging their country's future for three generations or more to see that this comes about, and the Regimento Acero is siphoning off a large portion for itself. They'll fight like pros - as long as the checks keep clearing.

They look great! I have a whole load of sci fi 6mm metal waiting to be painted/re-painted and your stuff always makes my brush hand twitch! Thanks for the inspiration

Given they've got the same gear as the Slammers, I bet they don't!

Really nice - hard to believe they're 3mm

Kind of you both to say so! I continue to find it remarkable how much detail you can cram into a 3mm scale figure - O8 really sets a high standard and they allow a schtunk like me to paint up a very reasonable force in only a relatively short time.

Much of the job is picking the right colours to match or enhance, and I think with 3mm it's a lot about contrast as well (with the base, with the other colours on the model) and you've a good eye for that.

I also still really like your markers on the back, I've done similar on some 1/600th Austro-Prussian blocks from Irregular and it's not worked so well! Too wordy, I think.

Tell us more about the paint you used to get those great results.

The base coat is Rust-O-Leum "2x Cover" flat white spray primer. The colors are all Reaper acrylics. The base is Stormy Gray mixed 5:1 with Flow Improver - two coats gave it good coverage without distorting the details. Then I gave it Black Wash over that, and then a drybrush of Rainy Gray to bring out the details. The striping is a buildup of Pure Black, Stormy Gray, Rainy Gray and then Misty Gray highlights. The skirts are Pure Black with a Midnight Blue highlight and Ghost White insignia.

The bases are just cut plastic, 1mm thick black styrene with the corners trimmed using a 2mm radius metal rounder. The texture is Vallejo Fine Grey Pumice and the little printed base label I drew myself in Adobe Illustrator and printed onto adhesive labels, cut out and stuck on the base. When the pumice was dry I sanded the edges smooth to remove the excess material, then painted them with a wet blend of Dark Highlights, Tanned Leather and Khaki Highlights, mixed liberally on the base itself. Then I edge it with Pure Black and glue the tank on top.

Nice! Are those 1" x .75" bases for both infantry and vehicles?

They're 1/2" by 1", actually, with a 1/4" base label.

Thanks. On your 3mm scale Space Marines you used a different sized base (infantry bases are 1/2" x 3/4" including labels; the vehicles are 3/4" x 1" including labels.). What made you decide on 1" x .5" for these?

Uniformity. I'd already made a bunch with this base size (my St. Vincent Brgaide units) and didn't feel like bucking the trend. But really the 3mm scale Marines work better for gameplay so all else equal I ought to have used he same or similar scheme. Six of one. Half dozen of the other, I guess.
