I am almost finished with my starting space marine force so am thinking about my next project. It will likely be tyranids.

I would love to hear what you all think of these test models.

You can see a few more pictures and the details on my blog.

Thanks Pete.

I'm thinking of painting up a force that is very heavy on melee, maybe all melee. Lots of genestealers, hormogaunts, and non-shooty carnifexes.

How would that compete against other armies? Any thoughts or ideas?

That should be nasty once they are in close.

I'm just not sure they will be able to get close in.

I think the first one looks bloody terrifying and the thread title should come with a warning before I view it on my large monitor Grin

Game play - all close combat will be hard work but plenty of ambushes and reserves might help, and at least you'll have a lot of them.

@ Toxicpixie: Sorry about that. Wink

At 10 points per base for both hormogaunts and genestealers I figure I could field at least 80-100 bases plus a hand full of Carnifexes. Add in my command and a few ambushes and we are talking a scary force. Lots of painting to do. I wouldn't always do just a close-combat force, but it would be fun now and then.

Quantity has a quality all of it's own. Just watch for arty/Ortillery, mines and laser wire. And Flamers... Anything that slows them down/suppresses them en masse will cripple you...

Be a laugh though - worth it to see when you put another dozen and another dozen and... on table Wink

I decided to add a little more contrast to the models and basing. Check out my blog for some more pictures. http://gamingandshooting.blogspot.com/2014...

So these look better or worse?

Better - they "pop" nicely and look much more alien and squicky! Like your blog post says, they blend into the background a bit on the original basing. Which might better from a camouflage POV, but not so great on table Grin

These look much better the second time around.
Well done!

Personally not sure about the grass on the bases....
Wouldn't red or something more Sci-Fi be better...but maybe you're matching into others?

Cheers

I did my sci-fi this time round with "Mars style" red basing schemes on a red cloth. It does look very sci-fi, but it's very cliched - I kind of wish I'd gone something more mainstream and less obvious tbh!

Not every space-world is sterotyped-Mars, I guess.

Most of the tables I have access to are either green or brown. I like the idea though and might give it a try for a future force.

If It helps, the "terrain cloth" I use is a couple of nice red felt Xmas table cloths I picked up cheap one January Smile

Otherwise they'd almost certainly have ended up desert like in some way!
