Posted on 27 January 2012 at 10:20:38 GMT Hi all, OK, so i'm trying to settle on a colour scheme for a new force and wondered if anyone had any good ideas. OK, first off... Figures used: DRM Pax Arcadia Setting: 40k (32nd Millenium, during the Age of Apostacy) Force: Frateris Templars (Emperor-worshipping soldiers of the Ecclesiarchy - religious zealots) Environment: Industrial semi-desert So, there are (apparently) no sources that detail what these chaps looked like, what colour schemes etc. so i'm free to make it up. What colour scheme would you use? I'm thinking the two main colours would be a rich chocolate brown and a deep navy blue. I've used it on my Dune Harkonnen troops and it looks really good, but that doesn't seem to sort of 'fit' with the sort of 40k grim dark 'Religious nutter' feel. Not sure why. I'd like to avoid red, but other than that i'm open to suggestions. Would you do a colour livery at all? Perhaps going 'desert camo'? All help and opinions greatly received! |

Posted on 27 January 2012 at 10:26:58 GMT I'm no shining example (Pinko Kraytonians), but if you want blue and brown you could try a lighter variant and do as per British armour in WW2 North Africa, so a light brown/earth and light blue, but a shade darker to suit your choice. What scale are you going for? Camo on 6mm infantry is do-able but you might get fed up. |

Posted on 27 January 2012 at 11:55:53 GMT Nothing on 6mm is pointless. Not even buttons: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q264/angelba... http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q264/angelba... "Is camo in keeping with 40k religious nutters though?" Not really, it is an IN YOUR FACE style of warfare, not so hot on the common sense. White with desert colour shoulder pads and trim. White as it is nice and templar-esque and religious nutter pure and arabian. Desert colour pads because, well its a desert! |

Posted on 27 January 2012 at 12:01:06 GMT Yeah i was thinking about white and gold, perhaps with purple as a contrast. The vehicles would look a bit bright though, unless i 'grubbied them up' a bit. I did my 28mm VSF British vehicles in a sort of grubby white and it looked rather good. White would also 'morph' quite well into Star Wars stormtroopers. Good idea. Any others? |

Posted on 27 January 2012 at 14:17:55 GMT I'd go with a white based scheme if it was me as thats how I always think of Templars! Maybe combined with black if they are "evil" or the gold you mention if they are "good" |

Posted on 27 January 2012 at 17:37:29 GMT I would go with some combo of white, gold, and purple. Camo does fit for some unit types in the 40k universe, primarily Guard units, though some Marine Chapters have been known to camo their power armour. IRC Ash waste camo is a black and grey scheme. |

Posted on 28 January 2012 at 17:38:18 GMT Hi Luddite, When I'm looking to do any new schemes I get a piece of paper and just paint camo onto it until I like the scheme. I always write down the colours as well so if I add to an army I know what i used. http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww323/double... Also and examples of the Pacific Federation (Brigade Models) army I painted for a friend I'm going to be doing more photos from this and my own armies soon. http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww323/double... Posted on 29 January 2012 at 23:58:22 GMT No, seriously, they're very nice and they illustrate a point I was going to make: at 3mm-6mm scales in sci-fi, it pays to go with bright colors. But really, Stenic, you must have to fight down the impulse to buy a little Hello Kitty figurine to lead those Kraytos... |

Posted on 31 January 2012 at 12:57:41 GMT Chaps, thanks for all the opinions. There's some lovely looking colour schemes, and great forces linked out there. I've settled on: Base colour = chocolate brown Contrast colour = deep blue My opponent is planning to have bright white/red, sort of stark unnatural colours and so it seemed appropriate to go for deeper more 'earthy' natural colours. Once they're done i'll hopefully link up a few pictures. |

Posted on 07 February 2012 at 18:29:16 GMT Cambodian modern Attack helicopters (yes - they have at least 3 as I spotted them through the aircraft window as we landed as Siem Reape) are a tri-colour mix of sky blue, dark choccy brown and a sort of mint green in tiger stripes ... hmmm tasty! They are more blue underneath, a mix along the flanks and more brown to green looking down ontop. Obviously good ariel camo but could equally apply to a large vehical - so looking more 'horizon like' from the sides & 'ground like' when seen from above. Personally I am considering an entire armoured force in metallic copper with light blue for screens etc. A sort of Aztec type feel ... just gotta deside upon which force it would suit best. Of course at 6mm and with a very expensive (pointswise) army, you could paint up a load of different coloured varients and change them each time they move ... or am I getting really far too silly |
