Just completed my first MG bunker (10mm). The model is from Pendraken. Not quite sure about the round base though...

Cool! Like the barbed wire. Round base looks OK to me. If you don't like it you could always make up a scenic base with some trenches and maybe another bunker or gun pit as a "resistance nest".

Cheers

Nice work Smile

I never figures out what the extension wall is for, and why there aren't two of them - can anybody enlighten me?

The extension is to stop direct fire at the firing slit, bunkers should be paired - with walls on opposite sides. The wall goes on the expected line of approach.

Offers complete cover from fire from one direction, so any attackers have to drive round past it and then the bunker crew get a flank shot for free without offering up any vulnerability in return (at least on the Atlantic Wall ones, and I think the principle is the same!).

That's the general idea, the bunkers face along the beach, not at it! Wasn't there a bunker somewhere in the US landing zones where they got the build wrong and direct fire from destroyers managed to hit the firing slit and knock out the AT gun - one of the few examples where direct naval gunfire worked. Otherwise it was massive amounts of blast in an attempt to concuss the occupants.

Cheers

Actually there was a really good article in Wargames illustrated within the last year or two that covered how emplacements work. It was directed at their Flames of War range of scenics but was actually a pretty good read.
