I am doing some terrain boards for WW2 and got to thinking about asphalt roads. I am doing a small village which could be used for France or in a different era a Very British Civil War. Did they have white lines, yellow lines or no lines? Any ideas?

Answer is yes and no....

It's probably best to leave em off - since the damned continental jonnies drive on the wrong side of the road !

According to the blurb at direct.gov.uk white lines appeared in the Uk from 1918 and use spread rapidly through the 1920's and 1930's:

quote" by 1944 white lines were also being used to indicate traffic lanes and define the boundary of the main carriageway at entrances to side roads and lay-bys, and in conjunction with halt signs" end quote

I'd assume the main parts of Europe would have a similar time-line.

With a small rural village I'd think you could leave them off or maybe just have a couple at the main junction.

We don't have white lines now, just a thin row of uncrushed horse manure that the tractors have missed. One day I will move to a city (as if) and find out about civilization. Smile

So it sounds like a resounding yes and no. I think I will go down the junction only white lines route.

Stormforcex, you have no idea of living in the country. I live in the wilds, no mains water, no landlines, dirt roads with no paint on them. Our neighbours live in wooden houses dating from the year dot.

You don't know you're born mate.
