I prefer painting with direct sunlight, but as I am working away from home these days and with the night drawing in I no longer have good enough light to paint in the evenings during the week. I have tried various desk lamps before but have not found one that give a good enough light and is not too clumsly to use.

Any ideas on lamps that give adequate light for fine detail painting (preferably free standing) would be much appreciated? Smile

I have one of these and have had it for years.
I rate it.

Good natural looking light and very little heat waste.

Changing the topic slightly,

as my sight is getting worse (and / or is it just that figure sculptors are putting more detail on smaller figures!?) I find I need a magnifier and light (I am currently using a magnifying glass for deatils and my standard two daylight bulbs if I paint of an evening or on dull days, with one light over each shoulder!) - so

can anyone recommend a good combo of light and magnifying lens / glass that can also take daylight bulbs?

Or would you suggest I stick to separate items and just get myself a bigger and better magnifying glass? (or convert to 42mm games!!)

I would be inclined to go seperate that way you have choice about what to use when.

Not sure if the lamp part would be a pain when using the glass during good light and it is off and just in the way?

I don't think paintbrushes are designed for painting moustaches on 6mm soldiers! I have used pin points for decades to get the accuracy straight away and to avoid excess paint spilling into other areas. I currently use a long pin which I think may be a hat pin. I don't get eyestrain and i don't use special lighting. I have a regular overhead strip light and try to benefit from natural light too. Controlling the amount of paint applied saves time and improves accuracy.

Good point angelbarracks.

Novel method edenviews.
I can probably still see the pin to pick it up!! As for moustaches on 6mm I am not that ambitious!
