Posted on 11 March 2011 at 14:07:10 GMT hey all, well, I have a quandry re. my start up for 6mm terrain. I have a LOT of 2ft by 2ft wooden terrain tiles (covering rivers, roads etc) but they are scaled to 15m and take up a LOT of space I don't have very much space at all so I figure getting an old 6 x 4 felt cloth or one of those new fangled terrain mats and combining them with home made and store bought terrain (should be relatively easy to make my own rivers I guess just going to mean I need to make a workspace and get some time to do it ) Anyone got any good ideas here? I was planning to just roll with the terrain tiles but I really dont think I have the space, I figure a mat and all the terrain could probably go in one of those big plastic toyboxes and get shoved in a cupboard, jobdone |

Posted on 11 March 2011 at 15:05:36 GMT Here's what I experimentes with and it works very well indeed... 1) Spraypaint green bedsheet various earth and grass tones. 2) Get a bunch of styrofoam chunks to carve into hills. Put them under the cloth (no need to paint or flock them). 3) Use pastels to draw roads, rivers and the boundaries of cities and forests. 4) Place buildings, trees and other terrain on top. The sheet can be washed when you are done and the pastels will come right out. If they don't, touch up a bit with a spray can. If you're good, the result looks like this, is cheap and is VERY storable and portable: http://www.flickr.com/photos/6mmgaming/sets/721... I also made a bunch of push-pin trees for my set up. I push them into the hills and underlying table in order to secure the playing cloth. |

Posted on 11 March 2011 at 20:02:59 GMT I just got a 6ft by 4ft grass mat from *cringe* Games Workshop but I'm pretty impressed. £18.50 and so far (fingers crossed!) it seems reasonable durable. |

Posted on 12 March 2011 at 16:05:20 GMT BTW, the photo isn't of my set-up: it's MLuther's set-up. He plays "I ain't benn shot mum" and posts regularly on the GHQ forum. He's my mentor. My set up is nowhere near as nice as his, but I'm learning. You can see my first attmept here: http://leadnobleed.blogspot.com/2009/11/hellzap... |

Posted on 12 March 2011 at 20:09:08 GMT Hi, I am working on a similar project at the momment as I need a custom mat for the Tunisian table I am making. The pic below is my test piece which is about 5 x 4 (fits my dinning room table).....simply suedette, sprayed with green, brown and grey Humbrole acrylics. The few grass tufts are self adhesive tuft I got on Ebay. When I make the full mty for the Tunisian table I will use fake fur for the rougher grass/scrub areas. http://data6.blog.de/media/855/5398855_7e9fedf5... Posted on 17 March 2011 at 22:50:02 GMT Stick with terrain tiles but drop to 1' x 1', they will be easy to store then. They look sexy: http://angelbarracks.forumup.com/viewtopic.php?... |

Posted on 18 March 2011 at 12:59:33 GMT Ah, thanks sir, I just got an offer of some free tiles from a buddy in Oz (my tiles are all scaled to 15mm and made of wood so they weigh a ton) if i can afford the postage I might just take him up on it |
