There are lots of scenarios in this section of the forum but very little on campaigns. I would like to run a simple CWC campaign and was wondering if it had all been done before. If so can I be pointed in the direction of a link or similar where I might get a flying start?

I should say that the campaign I had in mind was Europe late 70s early 80s but any location would do.

The bear and the flame link describes a long running campaign - I think in the period you are describing.

Thanks for finding the link RichardSmile. I can highly recommend this campaign put together by Steve. It is great fun with a great narrative. Although I am biased as my Brits didn't lose a game and single handedly kept Communism at bay.

'...and single handedly kept Communism at bay'

Hmmm, not quiteWink although I certainly can't claim I won every game; only a couple!

It was, however, the best campaign I've ever played in - very well put together and definitely worth re-fighting.

For my Bear and the Eagle I used the TSR board game red storm rising to generate scenarios which workded quite well. If you don't own RSr, firstly that is something you should rectify immedianently, but other cold war board games should work fine too e.g. NATO: The Next War in Europe which I think is set in the 1970s so the time frame should work for you.

Play the board game (solo or with others) and for any battles that look important/ scenic, don't resolve them with the board game mechanic but with a CWC game, giving advantages to one side depending on their strength on the board

Thanks for all the links and advice, I intend to follow the board game/ CWC game route.

It's a really good game in its own right, hard work for both sides Grin I'm told it's even better when you combine it with the naval side of the Hunt for Red October game...

I played half a dozen of Firestorm96's scenarios, and good fun they were and really nice to fight a battle with some context!

If you do the same/similar I'd be happy to play some thru again as & when able Smile

Can I ask if there was a standard way of converting board game strengths to points on the table top or was it just to get the particular scenario in a particular place?

there is no real science to it, just be creative and scenic in awarding advantages/ disadvantages that vaguely make sense give the overall picture in that area. e.g. if a unit is cut off give them all sorts of negative supply rule stuff. you could also vary the points per side if there are big odds in favor of one side on the board but you may find this gives a bit of a one sided game, its probably better to change around the random points modifiers to reflect numerical strength.

Also, Google maps is great for getting terrain ideas

If you want I would be happy to play through some of your scenarios.

My own campaign has been going for a few years now as every 3-4 months I get really into the period and churn out a few scenarios, AARs and historical stuff until I get bored or real life catches up, another batch may well be coming up. Writing the AARs is very hit and miss in my opinion, when I read back through all my posts there are some that I cringe to read but others really capture the feel of the period and are, if I say so myself, pretty well written. Generally since you are doing a campaign you will want to write it "in charactor" as it were instead of the regular stlye.
