Hi Guys

I wondered if anyone (mainly Mark/SultanBev) had any TO&Es for this campaign.

I've just researched it briefly on Wikipedia and it struck me that it might actually be a campaign playable in its entirety on a big table with CWC at 1 stand = 1 platoon scale?

Anyone got any thoughts about this?

Cheers

It looks interesting!

(Greek) Cypriot National Guard with Czech T34/85 tanks, Marmon-Herrington MkIVF armoured cars and BTR152 APCs vs Turks with M47 tanks and M113 APCs!

Lots of nice aircraft too, and para-drops, and heli-landings!

Does anyone know if Marmon - Herrington MkIVF armoured cars are available in 6mm?

Mark

I just went to the 10mm shop to order the above lists and I can't find T2M listed!

You're right the French WW2 Panhard does look similar body-wise but I think it only has one rear axle?

Cheers

Are you still working on this project? If so, would be really interested in any progress sounds like a great idea for a game. Might have to put it on my to do list along with the other 127 items! GrinGrin

Richard - it's still pretty high up my 'Want to do' list but apart from working out what to buy from where that's as far as I've got!

The background to it is pretty grim really - yet more 'ethnic cleansing' etc. The actual landings and fighting are quite interesting including the Turkish CO apparently going down to friendly fire from a super-bazooka! Wikipedia has reasonable coverage other sites on the intermaweb are rather 'partisan'!!

I know what you mean! Been researching the IndoPak Wars of 1965 and 1971 with a view to wargaming them and the reports are very hard to make sense of as one side reports events completely differently to the other.Grin

Yet another reason to love and support Wikipedia.... it's info is always so even and objective. One of the last few non-partisan information sites.

The Cyprus war does seem to have lots of potential for game-ability. How were you thinking of doing it? Story-based? tree-style? open-ended turn-based? Nodes?

Zeph - I have a preference for node style game maps. I think this is partly due to DBA and partly due to Frank Chadwick using them in Command Decision campaign packs in Command Post quarterly.

Richard - ah don't get me started on doing Indo-Pakistan wars too!

There's a little historical info on the Cypriot National Guard on Wikipedia but it mostly refers to current kit etc. I am pretty sure that they followed Greek Army style organisation, just with more random kit!

I think that the ACIG & MicroMark stuff gives enough info for a pretty good recreation of events.

I have started pooling models for it now - some Hallmark WW2 US infantry (for use as Turkish Marines), some H&R T34/85s, and some Skytrex M47s have been moved from other projects into a '1974 Cyprus drawer'. Also one of my pals has a shed-load of Ww2 era landing craft we could use!

Hi

Just started planning this project and would like peoples opinion on which H&R figures to represent those involved.

Thanks

Richard

I was planning on simply using WW2 Americans for the turks and WW2 British for the Greek Cypriots although I was going to buy my figures from Magister Militum/Hallmark.

Not really related to playing the landings. But I used to work with a guy who was in Cyprus when they invaded. In typical Kiwi fashion he was sleeping off a night of excess booze on the beach. Woke up when prodded with a rifle and lead away to a safer place. Described landing craft every where. he was a bit of a hippy so it may have been more than booze!

Did you get anywhere with this project Jules?

The reason I ask is it might make an interesting subject for one of the CWC Megagames in the future. What do you think?

Cheers

Someone on the Lead Adventure Forum was asking for info on the current British forces in Cyprus as their group (in Poland I think) was going to do a present day re-fight. I did my best on British TO&E.

There is an interesting note from the Greek Cypriot government from 2007 complaining about the Turkish forces: http://www.cyprus.gov.cy/MOI/pio/pio.nsf/All/4F...

I particularly like:

"The Turkish occupation forces in Cyprus are armed with the latest technology in military equipment and weaponry, as follows:

Main battle tanks 296
M48A5C (training) 9
M48A5T1/T2 287"

obviously far more modern than the CNG's T90s!

(NOT making light of the fact that they consider half of their island to be illegally occupied)

As an aside a friend mentioned the other day that she thought her Turkish doctor was discriminating against her because she'd been brought up in the British base area of Cyprus!
