Following on from another post there is reference to the Iraqis using their helicopters in an indirect fire mode. Apparently they would load them up, fly to the back edge of the combat area, tip the nose up and let fly the missiles etc.

Has any one used helicopters this way and if so could you post what rule you invented to cover it?

Treat it as a pop up attack that doesn't allow use of ATGW, but make it usable for armies/choppers/time period that can't normally use pop up attacks...

Maybe just treat them like an (off-board) rocket artillery barrage in this case? So, use double deviation, and no concentration (or ATGW attacks) allowed. Maybe also with one (or more) attack(s) less, since it's not very efficient to do this? You should probably also limit placing the target point to within the range of the heli (or measured from the table edge if off-board). No LOS to the target point is required.
AA fire is only possible if they get LOS (and range) to the heli, or to the point it's supposed to be (if off-table).

Treating as off table arty sounds simple - either pre-planned or called in via a HQ as usual

Any lower and it would be *really* dull to play!

So indirect helo's as preplanned arty then, sounds conclusive Smile

Thanks for all the input. I think its quite clear its preplanned indirect fire.
