Hi folks,

I've had about four games of CWC so far and it is become clear to me and my opponent that the amount of terrain on the table has a huge effect on the game. We are playing Cold War West Germans v Soviets and it is clear that the Nato player (me) has an advantage when there is less terrain on the table due to the greater range of Leopard 2's guns.

We are considering adding a house rule for terrain generation. Looking at the rule book for some guidance it recommends no more than one item of terrain per 50cm^2. Now does this mean a square 50cm x 50cm (= 2500cm^2) or a square 7.07cm x 7.07cm (= 50cm^2). The former would allow for about 6 items of terrain on a traditional 6'x4' table. The latter would seem to be to make for a very crowded table.

I am working on a system based on a set of cards where there are several cards for each terrain type (farmland (low terrain), grassland (open), grassed hill, wooded hill, woods, shrubland). The idea is that the defender and the attacker select a number of of terrain cards, which are then shuffled and dealt to created the layout of the table. For example if the table is divided into 6 squares and the scenario allows the defender to have most of the choice of the location of the battle then the defender is allowed to pick 5 cards and the attacker 3. This is a ratio of 4-2 plus an extra card each to randomise things a bit.

Any ideas, what to other do to create a table layout of a club game?

Throw it on.....

My trick is to use lots of fences and hedges.

We just load up with what looks right, but try to make sure the maximum 'average' line of sight is going to be no more than at40cm's (at800 metres in scale) with a few 'lanes' for longer, and/or breaking it up further with fences/walls/hedges, fields etc.

"Looking at the rule book for some guidance it recommends no more than one item of terrain per 50cm^2."

Not sure where you read this, but in the intro, it recommends at least one third to one half of the table is covered with terrain to avoid long LoS. The more the merrier to be honest.

Thanks for the replies guys....

"Looking at the rule book for some guidance it recommends no more than one item of terrain per 50cm^2."

Comes from the bottom of page 42 "Table Set Up".

IGB? That acronym escapes me!

Okay "So throw it on" it is. I think we will have to try a table with more terrain for our next game!

Definitely a case of "more is more" - as others have said here, lots of terrain will make for a much more enjoyable game I think.

By the way, 50cm^2 is, for example, an area 5cm x 10cm. If you have one terrain piece for every area that big your battlefielde will definitely encourage use of infantry! ;-)
