Hi guys,

Just a quick question about Snipers, and forgive me if this has already been covered. The rules state that they can only be targeted by units within 20cm. However, it also states that snipers can shoot at "any" target. So, does a sniper who wants to shoot an enemy sniper need to move to withn 20cm, or can he attack him out to the limit of his own range?

I dont see why not?

I think this is one of those things within the rules where you play it the way that works for you and your mates.

I have been known to be wrong though!

Part of a snipers job, so must be OK.

Snipers are very difficult to spot - also part of their job! I've done trials with sophisticated imaging kit and all kinds of eletro-optic detection stuff. A sniper did a "stalk" against us and got to within 400m with a group of 8 searching for him. No one spotted him. Sad

I'd reckon that they need to be in 20cm.

I like the fact that we can use snipers as counter snipers too, so we allow them longer range when targeting another sniper. We do it so that they are hidden well though, so you need a 6 to hit them.

Interesting question.

Bit of a logic loop – does Sniper A’s accuracy (may target any unit within range & LOS, treating them as in the open) beat Sniper B’s fieldcraft (may only be fired at by troops within 20cm) or not?

A case could be made either way, I think (20cm representing 200 – 400m depending on scale being played). You pays your money and takes your choice.

"Interesting question."

Thanks, I thought so too. It came about because I wanted to do a scenario set in Afghanistan with 3000 points of Taliban Mujihideen assaulting 1500 points of US and Northern Alliance. I'm using the Mujihideen list for the Taliban with a few minor changes, but they've got so many snipers that I realized that all they have to do is keep their snipers out of 20cm range, and they can suppress pretty much everything the defenders have with impunity. Well, impunity sucks. I hate impunity. So I was thinking that I should give the brave defenders something to counter that, like maybe one of those super-duper damage-inflicting American snipers armed with the Barrett rifle.

But I'm leaning toward just keeping it to 20mm, although it would be more satisfying to let the sniper reach all the way out. I'm thinking that it is not so much a question of the range of the weapon or the shooting skill of the shooter, but rather the ability to actually spot a tiny, hidden target in the first place. Either way I play it, I think it's a pretty good subject for debate.

IT could get kludgey, but I would consider the idea that a sniper on overwatch can shoot any sniper who fires, even outside of the 20cm range.

This kind of give the feel of a sniper/counter sniper battle in my mind.

During sniper training courses more time is spent on observation than on concealment. Observation and counter sniping are core skills of the sniper.

The current soloution (valid for 2001 as well) is US counter-sniper identifies general area and then JDAM/ATACMS/155mm.... with the precision we can get with these munitions at the moment - that is it.

Treat them as scouts, if one sniper wants to shoot at another, first roll a d6, need to beat the score in distance divided by 10 like recce comms, 21 - 30 need a 3, 31-40 need a four, 41-50 five, above 51 a six.

Yeah, I'd say artillery/air support to stonk enemy snipers, with own snipers counting as specialised recce.

Of course, that would involve a conscious rejection of the rule on page 40 that snipers "may not be used ... as a target for artillery or air strikes."

Said rejection might be appropriate, of course (sorry, Pete!).

I like the idea of sniper as specialist recce / scouts: with a simple mechanism to allow for bringing in arty / air stonk [as per Lonnie's suggestion]
