As my club is revisiting CWC after a long while and a cracking game the other night. I had forgot how good this game is. I'm reorganizing my Soviets. There seems to be lots of command vehicle you can get in 1/300. Which command vehicles do folks recommend?

I was thinking BMP-1 KSH for tank division CO and HQs, BTR60 PA for the motor rifle division.

For FAC BTR 60 PB or PU
FAO BMP-SON , ACRV or BTR-60 PA

Who would use a BRDM 2u?

At divisional level anything goes. Can use BTR-50's for instance. There were also command lorries. The BRDM2U, most btn HQ's had one, and obviously the Recce units.

Yeah, remember the CO/HQ stands are just markers representing the C3 facilities and networks in that part of the battlefield.

If you are the creative type you can really go wild, creating lovely little mini-dioramas.

Micro mark also list the BRDM-2U being used in the regimental HQs of East German units.

For the Leningrad districts you can use command MT-LBs - there are also number of nice variants to add to the command base alongside the basic command vehicle, such as the ACRV MT-LB (see the thread on Soviet infantry formations in the general section of this forum).

I have also found a few old models of MT-LBs in my 'bits' box that were manufactured with a separate turret (any guesses on who the manufacturer is/was - it is not GHQ quality) but that allows me to convert them into the field ambulance variant ... again nice to go on a CHQ command base.

They would be H&R.

We have our ongoing Cold War Commanders activity you could hook into - even if it was only to hold local games related to this years scenario - Arctic Strike - and have the results feed into the overall campaign?

Hi Big insect thanks for the offer. My club is Leighton Buzzard near Milton Keynes...I'm afraid my club has something of an attention deficiency problem when it comes to wargaming jumping about from periods, scales and rules. A lot of micro tanks were bought at last years Salute (which haven't all been painted up) without thinking about the rules to use. I note a big group of the gang are going to this years Salute so I expect something new to be brought back. Still I'm enjoying the games of CWC at the moment but I suspect I'll soon have to wait a number of years before it comes back.

Leighton Buzzard. Jump on the train for Grimsby in September, it'll be great.

Thanks Andy for the invite I will give it some thought. Is your event a competition or a series of related multi player battles?

Hmm I left South Humberside (Scunthorpe) in 1976. It might be a bit too traumatic for me to return.

We usually play a big game weekend in September, but there can be any number of games played beforehand - share the results and the group tries to write these into the big weekend games. In the past, we have tried to play on large multi-player tables, but more recently, especially for Arctic Strike, we'be broken the action into smaller tables or sections of table with a couple of players per side.

Scunthorpe to Leighton Buzzard. I went in the opposite direction, Watford to Hemel Hempstead to Chester. I find Watford completely different to how I remember it.

I'd recommend attending at least 1 big Cold War Commanders event in a lifetime ... even if it means travelling back up to Grimsby

These are not competitions - more competitive clashes between NATO and Warsaw Pact forces - usually c.1985. As Andy says we have played huge multi-player games - which are great fun - tables groaning with tanks, but they can also be frustrating as it's hard to play a game to completion even over 2 days.
So this year it's smaller tables with 1:1 or 2:2 games

There is also Joy of 6 in Sheffield (Sunday July 15th? I believe)
or
Come across to Slimbridge, Gloucestershire on Sunday 15th April and join in the CWC Arctic Strike fun there.
Or make a weekend of it and join us for the refight of Jutland on Saturday 14th and stay over as the Tudor Arms (where we play) has good accommodation.

You'll learn a huge amount about how the rules work.
