I am about to start painting my first NATO tank in the three colour scheme. Could anyone tell me the best Vallejo paints to use? Unfortunately I have a tendancy to see colours slightly differently to some people so advice would be most welcome.

the colours change depending on the country involved if you state what vehicle for what Army and date it would help people know what you are after.

Patwarg,
I found this site very useful. http://gurth.home.xs4all.nl/afv/natocamo.html . It lists a number of paint codes you can then match up to the nearest Vallejo colour here; http://cdn.acrylicosvallejo.com/5b001b2cd9766dd... .
Hope this helps.
cheers

The vehicles are 6mm American Abrams MI tanks but I will be moving on to the rest of the US army. I am concentrating on the late 70's and early 80's

Steve,

Thanks for the links. The second one is especially useful for all sorts of projects.

Pat,
late 70's all would be in MERDC. Early 80's M1's and M2's might be in MERDC or basic forest green, you see lots of pics of both. The American army didn't use NATO 3 colour till about 85 and then it was an intermediate pattern. You might find this useful, especially the colour plates. http://www.scribd.com/doc/61629430/Vanguard-41-...

Steve,

Thanks for the link. From this it looks as though I can not get a generic pattern for the period I am looking at so will just have to go for one I like. I doubt my oponents will complain especially if they are winning!

Pat,
they were supposed to repaint certain colours depending on the time of year. It would appear many didn't bother and had the same basic pattern all year round. So which ever you choose won't be incorrect. I paint all my Americans no1: Winter, US and Europe, Verdant.
Cheers

I found a good weathering breaks up the pattern so no one can say it's wrong. A lot of pictures of US vehicles mid 80's are so covered in dust it hard to tell the original colour.

Thanks for all the help. I do like the 'dust' suggestion. That will help a lot.
