Folks,
Finally got around to starting my Berlin Brigade force, it's only a small force using CWC but will be bulked out with some 'normal' green and black stuff. Not sure what to do with bases as yet!
This is a far as I have got - the Brigade HQ, more when I get back from work over the festive season.

I remember being sent to Berlin April 91 for a culture exchange and being given the money by the Unit. Aah a week on the lash and a bit of Battlefield touring.
in 1992 Bde went down to 2 Bn's from 3 then in 1993 down to 1 then disbanded in 1994.

Superb, absolutely superb.

Always wanted to have a go at a Berlin Brigade unit for CWC. Another one to add to the list!

Cheers

Richard
that could be crisis point 2014
can just imagine it now hand to hand fighting through charlottenburg. could do all three NATO Brigades.
UK was only 3 Bn's and 1 tank Coy.
a lot of the houses could be from Najewitz Modellbau his urban rterrain could be easily recognised for local buildings within berlin.

Hi Sean,

There is a good AAR from that game here.

Definitely something I would like to do in the future. Like you say may be a subject for a future Crisis Point.

Cheers

Richard - if we do look at it for 2014 I got the map from the SPI game. Could use my ruins for it, and set in 1962/3.

Heroics Irregulars would make good police, cars - suspect irregular cars might do it.

Nice idea. You'd have to make the ruins a bit mossy and overgrown to look like 15 year old bomb sites.

Could also set it in the winter of 48/49 (i.e. the Berlin Airlift) - might be an interesting "what-if" and could use up a bunch of late WW2 Brits, US (also French at the time) and Soviets. Not sure whether CWC or BKC would be better for that sort of era. At least the ruins would be fresh!

My Dad and most of my uncles breathed a huge sigh of relief in the summer of 49 as they had just been demobbed from the RN and RAF, but were still on the reserve, or were doing National Service in Germany or Egypt. It was shot-lived though as Korea erupted the following year.

I remember once in the seventies being told by a grizzled old Irish S/Sgt that if the shit hit the fan we couldn't use private vehicles to block roads as we were the to protect the western way of life in Berlin and that would mean seizing private property and we weren't Damn Bolsheviks.

I realise that this is a bit of threadromancy here but I tracked down the pictures of Andy's stuff after recently buying the Tankograd book on the Berlin Brigade.

There is an excellent article about GDR plans to attack Berlin here:

http://www.benning.army.mil/armor/eARMOR/conten...

For those who asked about TO&E, from what I can tell the British Brigade was 3 Light Role infantry battalions each augmented with 6 Wombat on Landrovers (in addition to their 6 Milan) and 4 FV432s with Raden (real world numbers not CWC numbers); they also had 2 (off the top of my head) ordinary 432s although I can't work out if they had a specific role or were just utility vehicles. In addition there was one full strength squadron of 18 Chieftains. I can't find details of any additional artillery attached; I don't think that there was any but I'm not going to bet my life savings on it.

The GDR units are very mixed and could be a fascinating project.

If anyone decides to run this as a megagame let me know, I'd definitely be up for it!!!

Forgot to add that the infantry's recce was in 8 Foxes per battalion (for some reason still painted in green/black).

Interesting read this is a subject I would really like to game one day. A big table with Berlin on it would look impressive indeed. Just ordered a copy of the Berlin 85 game as a starting point.

Cheers

Hello Richard,
hmmm.....colours - I'm a little 'anal' in this respectHuh?

I did some digging around and came up with different folks suggestions -

White RAL 9010, any white would do Humbrol 34 or 134

(Blue) Grey colour Ral 7031, Humbrol 27 or 125 (Too dark to me).

Brown RAL 8025, so Humbrol 186 or Gloss 10 + a touch of Satin brown 133

Or....

For the Grey - Humbrol Grey 28, VMC 883 or 152, or Tamiya XF55/XF54
Brown - Humbrol 29 or VMC 921 or 141
For the white - Humbrol 134 or VMA 71087 or 71005, Revel 69

Looking at my notes, I eventually went for..

The models were spray painted a white undercoat (Gamesworkshop skull white or whatever they call it!)
The grey is a thinned Tamiya XF66 light Grey
The Brown is Humbrol 186.

The models then received a localised 'pin' wash of Mig Productions Dark wash, I then lighly dry-brushed up some edges in the original colour.

To me it looks right in 1/300, it may not in a larger scaleConfused

Hope this helps?
