Hello chaps

thinking about modern wars using CWC - cannot decide between 6mm or 10mm - any strong views?

Whichever of the two scales you prefer, can you point me to some manufacturers in the scale? - Pendraken seems to ignore the modern period unfortunately.

I know Minifigs does moderns but a lot of comments on this forum have put me off them - should I be put off?

MF are expensive - and some of the kit is a nightmare to fit...

Pendraken give some modern coverage:

Indo-China: French & Viet Minh
Vietnam: VC, NVA, US & Australian

The Vietnam Aussies are also a shoe-in for SADF infantry...and their colonial Afghans have put in an appearance in my Soviet-Mujahideen forces too Wink

It has to be said that you do have way more choice in 6mm - I've done a number of battlegroups in 6mm & then flogged 'em...just doesn't do it for me as a scale really...

I do like 3mm though - top-notch - for both value and that on a 'normal' 6x4 table you're looking at 'proper' ranges...and you can play a good scrap on a coffee table too. Grin

I use and would recommend 6mm. Good balance between look and feel for the game and also scope for fancy modelling/painting. I use all ranges (Skytrex, Heroics and Ros, Scotia) and although they all have some duff models overall the quality is good and the ranges extensive. I had avoided GHQ due to cost and a perception that at 1/285th rather than 1/300th (as the above ranges) that they were bigger than other ranges. I've since found this is not the case and some models mix well in size with 1/300 ranges.

If you want BIG games I would go with the Pico Armour 1/600th range. Very nice LITTLE models but too small for me.

Worth checking the http://www.microarmormayhem.com site for pics of some ranges. And do a trawl of the CWC Miniatures forum here.

Hope that helps...

H&R work perfectly well for me in 6mm; a good combination of detail and price.

I use and would recommend 6mm.

The choice then becomes one of cost/quality.

If you want reasonable quality and cost then H&R with a pieces from Scotia and Irregular are the way to go.

If you prefer the best quality you can get then GHQ and CinC are far above everyone else, even beating 10mm for detail imo.

Not GHQ or CinC - you can do 10mm cheaper. But 6mm all the way.

Yet another "6mm all the way" respondee!

I put 3-4 vehicle models on a normal sized base to give the impression of a platoon and then keep the ranges the same.

Heresy! Every educated person knows that 10mm is the One True Scale. EvilGimme

You modern types just have to wait until the 10mm manufacturers make the models... Grin

6mm for me all the way especially with some of the new stuff coming from H&R. It will be a long time before 10mm has the same range available for modern.

And in 6mm it's still possible to model a guy holding a tray of éclairs!

What more could you want? Smile

Okay - 6mm it is then - and for BKC too! - don't want to make two sets of terrain etc. The paperterrain.com 6mm buidlings look brilliant and H & R will do fine for the forces - thank you all very much.

Afet further delibeartion and agonising it seems that BKC at 10mm and CWC at 6mm is the way to go and the terrain does not need to be duplicated apart from buildings - so all is fine and at last I know what I am planning!

Thanks again to one and all.

Now which period first.................I think I'll roll a die to settle thatSmile

You'll be pleased to know that a die was cast and came up with CWC - modern wars based in a country called Dunga which resembles half of the eastern side of the African continent - capital is Fukawe.

The army and country are run by Idi Fatbelli. There are various factions within this vast country and frequent incursions from unfriendly neighbours in South Africa and Arabia to the north.
