Posted on 16 December 2010 at 14:08:19 GMT My method, if you want to call it that, is very simple. I spray prime them grey. Then I glue them to their bases with Aleen's Tacky (a thick PVA craft glue). I paint the bases with a brown earth colour, then paint the minis themselves. I use craft paint acrylics. I give every thing a quick overall coat of the base colour for that unit. Grey for the Israelis, green for the Soviet/Syrians. When that is dry I pick out the key details. Vehicle machine guns are very dark grey, black looked too stark. Infantry rifles are black. Soviet helmets get a darker green. A dab of flesh for faces and hands is key to bringing figures to life. Drivers helmets where visible get a dab of green. Tires are black, and that's about it. I don't paint boots on standing figures as they get lost in the flock. Prone figures I do paint the boots. I have tried ink washes and dry brushed highlights, but I find they don't look enough netter for the extra work. Bases are patches of flock and gravel/sand. This gives a two tone base that works equally well on my tan desert cloth and my green grass cloth. When everything is finished I give it a good coat of acrylic floor polish. Quick, simple, but at arms length on the table quite effective. I have gone all out painting every microscopic detail on 6mm and even 3mm, but you really can't see it on the table so since I paint for gaming, not contests, I don't usually bother . |
